Druid City Canopy Coalition

Please consider joining the Druid City Canopy Coalition. We are an informal group interested in assisting with Tuscaloosa’s urban reforestation through procuring and distributing trees.

We are especially interested in working with neighborhood associations.

Community Organic Garden

The UA organic community garden started in the Spring of 2009 with a group of students interested in knowing more about how food grows and hoping to foster a stronger bond between students, faculty and the greater Tuscaloosa area.

It began as a 20×20 foot plot graciously given to us by the UA arboretum and has since doubled in size. In its creation, we hoped that it would serve many functions from educating students of all ages, to creating an outlet to give back to the community. We grow just about anything in season and would love your input and participation.

The University of Alabama Arboretum maintains plant collections for botanical education and appreciation. The Arboretum features walking trails through a native woodland section, a wildflower garden, a collection of ornamental plants, an experimental garden, and a children’s garden. Most of the Arboretum’s land was donated by the federal government to help support the University’s goals of promoting research and providing public education and service. Today the Arboretum is part of a national network that shares plant information with scientists, students and the public. The Arboretum is sponsored by the Department of Biological Sciences.

The arboretum is open daily from 8AM until sunset, except on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. There is no admission charge for entrance. Tours are available by reservation. Please contact the arboretum for more information.

Join us for an afternoon of entertaining and informative activities focusing on bats. We will BUILD BAT HOUSES to place in the Arboretum, learn about echolocation, trick or treat for BAT SALAD,and MORE! Appropriate for ages 5-12.

It’s been an active summer of sculpture in the Arboretum’s Children’s Garden!

Claire Lewis Evans, a graduate student in Art at The University of Alabama, donated the metal sculpture pictured here.

Its presence adds a wonderful sense of movement and playfulness to the space.

Labyrinth in the Gardens

This summer, a group of volunteers led by Joan Mallonee, William Doty and Arboretum caretaker, Kenneth Robinson, set out a large stone labyrinth.

Not only is it lovely visually, it’s the perfect way to walk off the stress of the day. Hope you can come to visit these beautiful additions to the garden soon.
